Imagine you are in your office, thinking about a recent interaction with a student that has left you troubled. Many things might be running through your mind…Is this something I should be worried about? Did I do enough or say the right thing? How can I best help this student?
For many students, personal matters can have a profound impact on academic performance. Our students may struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, and family responsibilities (among others). Trying to cope with any of these stressors, in addition to the demands of courses or rotations, can leave a student feeling distressed and seeking your help. This presentation is designed to provide faculty and staff with practical skills for navigating the challenging situations and struggles our students experience. You will receive information regarding the signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis, suggestions for intervening with students to result in positive outcomes and referrals, and options for support including counseling services, the Student Assistance Program, and DMU Cares.
We all play a role in the safety, health, and well-being of our campus community. Together, we are vital partners in the important work of helping students in distress find understanding, support, and appropriate campus resources. I hope you will join us!
