EDUCATIONAL NEED

Throughout their academic training, medical students gain experience with the neuromuscular examination. Developing the ability to differentiate clinical patterns of weakness based on underlying pathophysiology is crucial for building diagnostic skills early in their training. Recognizing clinical features that distinguish common peripheral nervous system disorders will enhance their foundational knowledge and prepare them for future clinical experiences.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Review the neuromuscular examination as it pertains to the peripheral nervous system.
  • Differentiate clinical patterns of weakness based on pathophysiology.
  • Recognize clinical and discriminating features of commonly seen peripheral nervous system disorders.
