PURPOSE

Learn from experts from across the state implementing 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! in schools, early care, out-of-school programs, health care clinics and communities. Sessions focus on how to adopt strategies that support the healthy choice as the easy choice and create policy, system and environmental changes within all sectors.

EDUCATIONAL NEED

Parents. Teachers. Health care providers. Business leaders. When it comes to kids, there’s one thing everyone wants – for them to be healthy! That’s why Iowa has created 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count!, a nationally recognized and evidence-based prevention framework to promote healthy habits. The goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating through policy and environmental change.

In October 2017, Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg announced the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! statewide childhood health initiative to promote healthy eating and active living for children and families in Iowa. Healthy Choices Count! is an evidence-based model that promotes the daily recommendations of five servings of fruits and vegetables, two hours or less of recreational screen time, one hour or more of physical activity, and zero sugary drinks. The initiative is a public-private partnership with the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative and the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Iowa is seeing an increase in the number of patients suffering from childhood obesity, and healthcare providers must be equipped with the knowledge to treat these patients properly. The 5210 framework provides a specific and recognizable way for providers to address healthy habits with patients and their families.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
