EDUCATIONAL NEED

Healthcare professionals frequently care for patients with serious illnesses who experience complex physical symptoms, psychosocial challenges, and difficult treatment decisions. Despite the growing need for hospice and palliative care services, clinicians may have limited training in recognizing appropriate referrals, managing symptoms, conducting goals-of-care conversations, and distinguishing between palliative care and hospice.

This session addresses the need for healthcare professionals to strengthen their understanding of evidence-based hospice and palliative care principles, improve communication with patients and families, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide compassionate, person-centered care that enhances quality of life and supports informed decision-making.

DESCRIPTION

This session will provide an overview of Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Participants will review diagnostic criteria, clinical presentations, proposed autoimmune mechanisms, and current evaluation and treatment approaches, including antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and psychiatric management strategies.

EDUCATIONAL NEED

PANS and PANDAS are complex neuropsychiatric conditions that can present with the sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, tics, and behavioral changes following infectious triggers. Because these disorders remain challenging to recognize and diagnose, healthcare professionals may have limited familiarity with their diagnostic criteria, clinical presentation, underlying pathophysiology, and available treatment approaches. Delayed recognition may contribute to unnecessary diagnostic testing, delayed intervention, and prolonged patient and family distress.

This session addresses the need for clinicians to better understand PANS and PANDAS by reviewing current evidence on diagnosis, proposed autoimmune mechanisms, evaluation, and multidisciplinary treatment strategies, enabling participants to recognize these conditions earlier and support appropriate, patient-centered management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Define PANS and PANDAS, including the diagnostic criteria and distinguishing features.Recognize the classic clinical presentation, including acute onset of OCD, tics, behavioral changes, and associated neuropsychiatric symptoms.Explain the proposed pathophysiology involving post-infectious autoimmune mechanisms and the role of streptococcal and other infections as triggers.Describe the basic approach to evaluation and treatment options, including antibiotics, immunomodulatory therapies, and psychiatric management.Recognize the importance of patient and family history, including changes from the child's baseline, when evaluating sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms and functional decline.Describe the impact of PANS/PANDAS on patients and families, including effects on eating, school, relationships, daily functioning, and quality of life.Identify the importance of coordinated, interprofessional and family-centered care when evaluating and supporting a child with PANS/PANDAS.Apply clinical and patient/family perspectives to a patient case to identify appropriate considerations for evaluation, management, communication, and family support.

EDUCATIONAL NEED

Diabetes is no longer viewed in isolation but rather as a core component of a complex cardiometabolic syndrome. While the foundational pathophysiology involves insulin deficiency in Type 1 and systemic insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes, the clinical challenge has evolved. We now recognize that hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity form an interconnected web of risk factors that accelerate multi-organ damage. Managing diabetes today requires a comprehensive cardiometabolic approach, focusing not only on lowering blood glucose levels, but also on proactively protecting the heart, kidneys, and liver.

The scale of this epidemic remains a critical public health priority. According to the CDC, between 38% - 40% of U.S. adults have prediabetes, yet more than 80% are unaware of their condition. The gap is particularly stark in Iowa, where roughly 34% of adults live with prediabetes, but only 7.2% report having received a diagnosis from a healthcare provider. This "diagnosis gap" represents a missed opportunity for early cardiometabolic intervention and lifestyle-based prevention strategies.

Modern diabetes care must transcend beyond clinical markers such as A1C. A holistic, person-centered approach recognizes that the individual, not the disease, is at the center of the care model. This requires integrating social determinants of health, including food insecurity, health literacy, and access to care; addressing behavioral health concerns, such as diabetes distress and mental health burdens that impact self-management; and promoting shared decision-making that personalizes medical management and lifestyle modifications according to each patient’s unique values, culture, and life circumstances.

This annual summit showcases the latest advancements in cardiometabolic health and integrated diabetes care. By moving beyond traditional glucose management, we aim to improve quality of life and long-term outcomes through a comprehensive strategy. Topics include the latest in pharmacological therapies, such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 RAs, evidence-based lifestyle medicine, and robust support systems designed to empower the whole person.

Chronic diseases are among the leading causes of illness, disability, and healthcare spending, yet many can be prevented or improved through healthy lifestyle behaviors. This session explores the impact of chronic disease and chronic inflammation on overall health while examining how everyday choices related to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle factors influence long-term well-being.

EDUCATIONAL NEED

Chronic diseases remain the leading causes of illness, disability, and death in the United States and are major drivers of healthcare spending. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 6 in 10 U.S. adults have at least one chronic disease, and 4 in 10 have two or more. In addition, 90% of the nation's annual healthcare expenditures are spent caring for people with chronic and mental health conditions. These conditions are strongly influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors, including poor nutrition, physical inactivity, inadequate sleep, chronic stress, and tobacco use.

This activity addresses the need for clinicians to recognize how evidence-based lifestyle interventions can help prevent, manage, and, in some cases, improve chronic disease while supporting brain health, learning, performance, and overall well-being. Participants will gain practical knowledge and strategies to help individuals make sustainable lifestyle changes that improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of chronic disease.
